    Paris Saint Germain History

Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, or PSG, is a French football club based in Paris. The club stadium is the Parc des Princes.

History
The club was founded in August 1970 (in fact, we should consider 1904 as the fusion between newly founded Paris FC and Stade Saint-germanois, founded 1904). Gathering funds from 20,000 subscribers, the founding of FC Paris marked the reappearance of a major club in Paris after the demise of R.C. Paris, Red Star and Stade Français (among others). The union of F.C. Paris and Stade Saint-Germain (from Saint-Germain-en-Laye and created in 1905), motivated by the need to find players, structures, and a place in a higher division, resulted in the creation of Paris Saint-Germain Football Club. The new club played in the Nationale (second) division for the 1970–71 season. The club won the division and was promoted to the top division in their first season.

After finishing 16th in 1971–72 the club split in May. Under pressure from the Paris City Council to remove the reference to Saint-Germain, the professional part of the club joined C.A. Montreuil and remained in the top division as Paris F.C., the amateur part of the club continued in the third division as amateur side Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG was promoted to D2 in 1972–73, as champions following the disqualification of US Le Petit-Quevilly. The following season the club returned to professional status and finished second in the league, winning promotion to the top division in a play-off with Valenciennes. In a pleasing symmetry for PSG supporters, Paris F.C. were relegated in that season and PSG would henceforth always play at the newly rebuilt Parc des Princes, once the ground of Paris F.C.

Daniel Hechter era (1973-1978)
By making its return among the elite (The club has remained in the top division since 1974), the PSG finds its abandoned professional statute earlier two years. Among the players of the time, one finds Jean-Pierre Dogliani, Mustapha Dahleb and François M'Pelé, and among the trainers, Velibor Vasović and Jean-Michel Larqué. Daniel Hechter itself draws the “historical” shirt of the club. The inauguration of the center of formation to the Camp des Loges takes place on November 4 1975. Pierre Alonzo took the direction of it. The Tournoi de Paris also finds life again in 1975. It will be disputed until 1993.
The presidency of Daniel Hechter is marked by his final vexations. Hechter is isolated presidency in January 1978 following the scandal of the double ticketting of the Parc des Princes.

Francis Borelli era (1978-1991)
Francis Borelli takes over for 13 seasons. Under its control, the PSG gains its first major trophies: two Coupe de France (1982, 1983) and a title of champion of France 1985–86.
The notable players of this period are Carlos Bianchi, Dominique Baratelli, Luis Fernandez, Ivica Surjak, Dominique Bathenay and Dominique Rocheteau then Safet Susic, Joël Bats, and Gabriel Calderon. George Peyroche, Gérard Houllier, Lucien Leduc and Tomislav Ivic were the principal trainers of the Borelli era. Resisting the attack of the Matra which, five years lasting, tried, in vain, to charm to the PSG its position of number 1 in the capital, president Borelli and his old school system of management are with end of breath to the attack of the years 1990. The club has remained in the top division since 1974, winning the league twice, in 1985–86 and in 1993–94. The club has also won the Coupe de France seven times (1982, 1983, 1993, 1995, 1998, 2004 and 2006). In Europe, the club became famous by making at least five semi-finals in a row (1993 to 1997) in various European cups, securing the title in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1996, only to lose the next year when they made the final again, against Barcelona. PSG has also had a number of runs in the Champions League, but never beyond the semi-finals.

Canal + era (1991-2006)
In 1991, Borelli is forced to pass the relay to Canal+ which invests in the PSG in order to propose with Olympique de Marseille an adversary likely to dispute the title to him. Mission accomplished in 1994 with the only conquest of the title of champion of France under the era Channel. During this period, the PSG is especially effective in cups with five Coupe de France (1993, 1995, 1998, 2004 and 2006), two Coupe de la Ligue (1995 and 1998) and a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (1995-1996).

For the base of this success, it is advisable to quote the players Bernard Lama, Alain Roche, Ricardo Gomes, Valdo, David Ginola, George Weah, Raí, Youri Djorkaeff, and coaches such as Artur Jorge and Luis Fernandez.

This prize list could have been expanded by the title of champion of France in 1993 following the downgrading of the OM. The League allotted the title well to the PSG but Canal + refused it. The encrypted chain indeed feared the reactions of its subscribers in Province, and Canal+ even threatened to withdraw football completely if this title were allotted to the PSG. The “higher interests of Canal+” passed before those of the PSG. The League and the Federation were inclined and the title of 1993 remained “not allotted”. Canal + even refused as the PSG disputes the UEFA Champions League after the exclusion of OM by the UEFA.

The takeover of the club by Canal+ is carried out gradually. After the intervention of 1991, one carries out April 21 1997 a modification with the capital of the SAOS “Paris Saint-Germain Football”. The weight of association law 1901 of the PSG passes from 51% of the capital of the SAOS to 34%. Canal+ is from now on majority shareholder. New modification in June 2001: association type 1901 of the PSG yields the whole of its shares of the SAOS (34%) to Canal+. At the end of August 2005, Canal+ repurchases the 2% prisoners by Alain Cayzac; the PSG is then to 100% under the control of the encrypted channel.

In 1998, the septennate of Michel Denisot is completed. Charles Biétry takes over but fails. He is compelled to quit after a six months presidency. The club is heavily involved in debt following this short experiment “Biétry” because of purchase of players like Augustine Okocha. One will retain in particular the return missed by Nicolas Anelka, sold 700.000 € in Arsenal FC and repurchased more than 33,2 M€ in Real Madrid for results quite lower than those awaited (39 matches, 10 goals). Since then, the PSG seeks to find balance and stability.

In 2000, the PSG belongs to the 14 founder members of G14. During this period, the return of Luis Fernandez did not improve the sporting situation in spite of the talent of players such as Ronaldinho, moreover the debt of the club had been multiplied by two.

The binomial Francis Graille-Vahid Halilhodzic is called with the rescue of the large Parisian patient who must undergo a true bleeding with a reduction of the expenditure of 40%. In spite of this problem, the PSG signs a beautiful season 2003-2004 with a Coupe de France to the key and a place of vice-champion of League 1 which opens to him the doors of UEFA Champions League 2004-05.

The season 2004-2005 is more difficult. Quickly eliminated from the UEFA Champions League 2004-05 and with the anguish in championship, the club is sportivement with most badly. Side slides, it is also the crisis with a sling of the supporters against the policy followed by the leaders. Vahid Halilhodzic is fired on February 8 2005 and is replaced by Laurent Fournier, former player of the club. President Francis Graille is in his turn dismissed on May 2 2005 by Canal +. Pierre Blayau succeeds to him. The project of Francis Graille which consisted in repurchasing shares of the club did not allure Canal+, which reaffirms by this change of president his desire for remaining implied in the PSG contrary with all the rumours announcing progressive disengagement of the majority shareholder.

December 27 2005, Laurent Fournier is fired by Pierre Blayau, whereas the PSG is to 1 point of second to the classification of League 1. Guy Lacombe is named to replace it, Paul Le Guen having refused the station.

Canal + announces April 11, 2006 the sale of the club at funds of American investment (Colony Capital), at funds of French investment (Butler Capital Partners) and at an American bank (Morgan Stanley). Canal + yields the club for an amount which is not communicated while taking responsibility for its important debt contracted by the club under its direction. This sale becomes effective June 20 2006. Alain Cayzac replace Pierre Blayau.
